In act four of the crucible John and Elizabeth ask each other for forgiveness . John does this because he wants Elizabeth to have a good life. This is because John is a good husband and cares for his wife even though she has been on trial for witchcraft. Elizabeth does this because she owes no devotion to a Church that is so strict and not right. This is because she does not want him to be connected with the witch trials when she has already been on trial now because she is afraid that he will be a part of it.
At the end of John’s talk with Elizabeth, he turns to the authorities and says, “I want my life.” This means John confesses, falsely, to witchcraft, but he stops agreeing to let his signed confession be posted around town. He explains that his name is too good for him to give up. His refusal ends up condemning him to death. The idea of personal integrity is an important theme in the play, and here it is cheif.
John is willing to give up his life to Elizabeth now that he wasn’t before and he would do anything in his power to stop the people believing such a lie that she is a witch. This is because John, like I stated earlier, is loyal and will do anything to save someone even when he knows what the consequences are.
After signing his name to the written confession, John then decides not to follow through with the lie. He doesn’t follow through because he feels the need to take back his confession. Rebecca Nurse, who is an icon in the community, is dying with him. Proctor's land will be taken from him and sold at a lower price if he goes ahead with his confession after Danforth and Parris.
In my opinion,I liked this Act because it was very emotional and it always kept you on your toes till the very end. It also shows that it is best to preserve the family name ,“Because it is my name! Because I cannot have another in my life!”
Honestly for me if I had to tell the truth to not let an innocent person die, I would tell the truth. Some people might think it's a little strange for me to say this so I'll explain.While telling the lie will save your life, do you really want to carry that burden around with you? I mean, depending on the lie, it can give an uneasy mind. I would rather tell the truth and die than having all that stress.

Forgiveness is sought by John and Elizabeth in Act IV of the Crucible. To ensure that Elizabeth has a wonderful life, John does this. In other words, even though his wife is on trial for magic, John remains a loving husband. As a result of her frustration with the church's overbearing rules and regulations, Elizabeth has decided to leave it. It is because she does not want him to be exposed to the witch trials after she has already gone through them, fearing that he will become a victim of them.

After John and Elizabeth's conversation, he tells the authorities, "I want my life." This signifies that John admits to being a witch, but he refuses to allow his signed testimony to be shown in public places. He says he cannot give up on his name because it is too excellent. Because of his denial, he was put to death.

Moral integrity is a fundamental concept throughout the drama, and it takes the lead here. John is prepared to give up his life for Elizabeth and will do all in his ability to dissuade the people from thinking that she is an evil witch. To put it another way, John's loyalty, and willingness to do whatever it takes to rescue a loved one make him a perfect candidate for this role.

After accepting the sworn statement, the decision was made not to go through with the deception he had planned. He does not go through with it since he wants to retract his admission. It is sad that Rebecca Nurse, a beloved member of the community, is dying alongside him. Danforth and Parris will take Proctor's property from him if he follows through with his confession. This performance was one of my favorites since it was full of passion and kept you guessing until the very end. It also illustrates how important it is to keep the family name alive, "Because it is my name! Because I cannot have another in my life! "

Personally, if it meant not letting an innocent person die, I would speak the truth if I had to. I am aware that some people may be surprised by this, so I will explain. Even if stating the truth saves your life, are you willing to carry that baggage around with you all the time? I mean, based on the lie, it might give you a shaky feeling in your stomach. I would sooner reveal the truth and go to jail than go through this ordeal again.
