Answer: the cost is one pound of trail mix is $2.25

the cost is one pound of jelly beans is $3.25

Explanation:

Let x represent the cost is one pound of trail mix.

Let y represent the cost is one pound of jelly beans.

For 3 pounds of trail mix and 5 pounds of jelly beans, the total cost is $23. It means that

3x + 5y = 23- - - - - - - - - - - - - 1

For 6 pounds of trail mix and 2 pounds of jelly beans, the total cost is $20. It means that

6x + 2y = 20- - - - - - - - - - - -2

Multiplying equation 1 by 2 and equation 2 by 1, it becomes

6x + 10y = 46

6x + 2y = 20

Subtracting, it becomes

8y = 26

y = 26/8

y = 3.25

Substituting y = 3.25 into equation 1, it becomes

3x + 5 × 3.25 = 23

3x + 16.25 = 23

3x = 23 - 16.25

3x = 6.75

x = 6.75/3

x = 2.25
