Yes, friction is a force which produces resistance in the motion of two solid bodies that are sliding over each other. Friction is a contact force because it only occurs between two bodies which are physically attached with each other.

For example, when we push a box in the forward direction, its motion is resisted by the surface on which it is moving. This resistive force which prevents the box from moving is called friction force.
