An organism has 8 pairs of chromosomes. If sperm and egg did not undergo meiosis, how many chromosomes would be present in a cell that resulted from the fusion of a sperm and egg?

Answer: 16 pairs

Step-by-step explanation:

Since meiosis halves the chromosome number present in a sex cell, the sperm and egg evading meiosis will therefore retain their 8 pairs of chromosomes.

Hence, on fusion of sperm and egg to form zygote, the 8 pairs in both becomes 16 pairs.
