Answer: b. actually helped the new Republican Party

Step-by-step explanation:

BROOKS-SUMNER AFFAIR

The Brooks–Sumner Affair as it came to be known, occurred on the 22nd of May 1856 in the United States Senate where a pro-slavery Democrat Preston Brookes used a walking cane to attack Senator Charles Sumner who was an abolitionist Republican almost to death.

In the aftermath of the attack, the Northerners were outraged and criticized the South for their failure to tolerate free speech and to put down criticism with violence.

Thousands turned out in support of Charles Sumner and his Republican Party and they made massive gains in the 1856 elections which then led to a presidential win in 1860.
