For a summer reading program at the town library, kids are given 1 raffle ticket towards a prize when they read for 6 1/4 hours. Alyssa set a goal of reading for at least 100 hours over the summer. She has already read 12 1/2 total hours this summer and received 2 raffle tickets. Write an inequality that shows how many raffle tickets (x) Alyssa will receive ( besides the 2 that she already has) if she completes her goal of reading at least 100 hours

Answer:

(6 1/4)(x +2) ≥ 100

Explanation:

There are several ways the two raffle tickets can be accounted for. Here's one of them:

(hours per ticket) × (number of tickets) is at least 100 hours

Since x is the number of tickets more than 2, the "number of tickets" in the above inequality is (x+2).

(6 1/4)(x +2) ≥ 100

_____

This says Alyssa will receive at least 14 more tickets if she reaches her goal.
