In Nathaniel Hawthonrne's 'The Scarlett Letter' Chillingworth, the husband of Hester sends her to USA ahead of him where she has an affair and a child and gets jailed for it.
1. Chillingworth has a closeted identity and goes into the prison as a physician called on by the jailer because of Hester's distraught state.
2. He gave Hester's daughter Pearl some medicine to ease her pain and revealed his new identity to her.
3. Chillingworth was a scholar and a man of means who fell in love with the young Hestor and through her family's pressure got her married to him.
4. Chillingworth tells Hester that his new goal in life is to find the father of Hestor's daughter and take revenge.
5. He forces her to promise him to not reveal his identity to anyone.
