Compare the two functions to see which has a greater rate of change. (Hint: change to y=mx+b format)

Function 1: -2x + 5y = 10
Function 2: -6x + 3y = 18

Answer:

Function 2

Explanation:

The slope m is a measure of the rate of change.

The equation of a line in slope- intercept form is

y = mx + b ( m is the slope and b the y- intercept )

Change both functions into this form

- 2x + 5y = 10 ( add 2x to both sides )

5y = 2x + 10 ( divide all terms by 5 )

y =
(2)/(5) x + 2 ← in slope- intercept form

with slope m =
(2)/(5)

- 6x + 3y = 18 ( add 6x to both sides )

3y = 6x + 18 ( divide all terms by 3 )

y = 2x + 6 ← in slope- intercept form

with slope m = 2

Now 2 >
(2)/(5)

Thus Function 2 has the greater rate of change
