In "To Kill a Mockingbird" Scout states "Gallant" of him to carry her outfit, as she says at the opening of chapter 28. She also tells him that she appreciates his taking her to the pageant and that she is looking forward to it. Jem comforts scout after Mrs. Merriweather falsely accuses her. The only thing he thinks she did wrong was "just came in a little late, that was all." In Scout's opinion, "Jem was becoming almost as good as Atticus at making you feel right when things went wrong."
