So you have to think: 6 1/4 + ? =20

A way to find that out is 20 - 6 1/4

I like to split 6 1/4 into 6 and 1/4

First, you subtract 6 from 20

20 - 6 = 14

Then here is the tricky part:

14 - 1/4 = 13 4/4 - 1/4 = 13 3/4
