Esmeralda told her teacher she was reading a book about King Henry XLI. Justin, Esmeralda’s classmate, said he had heard about King Henry VIII and asked about how many kings named Henry there were from King Henry VIII to King Henry XLI. How many kings named Henry were there after King Henry VIII up to King Henry XLI?

I'm not familiar with roman numerals but this question is from my brother's work.

Answer:

33

Explanation:

The values assigned to Roman Numerals are ...

  • I = 1
  • V = 5
  • X = 10
  • L = 50
  • C = 100
  • D = 500
  • M = 1000

In general, the system is additive, so repeated symbols are added to each other. Larger value symbols are placed to the left with one exception. Instead of repeating a symbol 4 times, the next-higher value symbol is used with the lower unit symbol preceding: IV = 4, IX = 9, XL = 40, XC = 90, CD = 400, and so on.

An overbar multiplies the symbol by 1000. There are various other means used to indicate higher values than are naturally represented by the symbols shown above.

__

VIII = 5 + 1 + 1 + 1 = 8

XLI = (50 -10) +1 = 41

The number of Henrys between Henry 8 and Henry 41 is 33.
