A turtle and a rabbit are in a race to see who is first to reach a point 100 feet away. The turtle travels at a constant speed of 20 feet per minute for the entire 100 feet. The rabbit travels at a constant speed of 40 feet per minute for the first 50 feet, stops for 3 minutes, and then continues at a constant speed of 40 feet per minute for the last 50 feet. Determine which animal won the race and by how much time?

Answer: the turtle won the race by 0.5 minutes.

Explanation:

The total distance to be covered by either the turtle or the rabbit is 100 feet.

The turtle travels at a constant speed of 20 feet per minute for the entire 100 feet.

Time = distance/speed

It means that the time taken by the turtle to travel 100 feet would be

100/20 = 5 minutes

The rabbit travels at a constant speed of 40 feet per minute for the first 50 feet. This means that the time taken by the rabbit to travel 40 feet would be

50/40 = 1.25 minutes.

It stopped and rested for 3 minutes. Therefore,

Total time spent already is 3 + 0.08 = 3.08 minutes

It then continues at a constant speed of 40 feet per minute for the last 50 feet. This means that the time taken by the rabbit to travel 40 feet would be

50/40 = 1.25 minutes.

Total time spent by the the Rabbit is 1.25 + 1.25 + 3 = 5.5 minutes

Difference between their times is

5.5 - 5 = 0.5 minutes
