1. Establishing a standard: Setting a certain level or benchmark upon which result can be compared. Standard should usually be quantitative to enable accuracy of our measurement. Defined standards should be laid out clearly and intelligently.

2. Taking actual measurement and comparing with standard: Once standard has been set, actual measurement could be taken using various analytical techniques and compared with the set standard in other to visualize or note the variations between our standard and actual measurement.

3. Taking corrective measures: The variation observed during comparison should be acted upon by observing the causes of deviation in our comparison and taking necessary steps to correct those deviations.
