A small can of an energy drink contains 7 more calories than 3 times the number of calories in a shot of the same energy drink. If a small can and a shot contain a total of 115 calories, how many calories are in each drink?

88 calories are present in small can and 27 calories in shot

Solution:

Let "x" be the calories in small can

Let "y" be the calories in shot

The small can and a shot contain a total of 115 calories

Therefore,

calories in small can + calories in shot = 115

x + y = 115 -------- eqn 1

Small can of an energy drink contains 7 more calories than 3 times the number of calories in a shot of the same energy drink

Therefore, a equation is framed as:

Small can = 7 + 3 times the number of calories in a shot

x = 7 + 3y ---------- eqn 2

Let us solve eqn 1 and eqn 2

Substitute eqn 2 in eqn 1

7 + 3y + y = 115

7 + 4y = 115

4y = 115 - 7

4y = 108

y = 27

Substitute y = 27 in eqn 2

x = 7 + 3(27)

x = 7 + 81

x = 88

Thus 88 calories are present in small can and 27 calories in shot
