This is because in the late 1840's, when the gold was discovered at Coloma, where he was then building a saw-mill. The contractor and builder of this mill was James W. Marshall, from New Jersey. He then posted a picture in an add and people from all over came to "Rush for the Gold". This then died down when gold was just almost completely wiped out and everybody just gave up. Today if you find gold there's a chance that it's not very much and probably will only get around $1,564.10 per ounce of gold which is likely not to happen. Hope this helped!
