For each of 8 colors, I have one shirt and one tie of that color. How many shirt-and-tie outfits can I make if I refuse to wear a shirt and a tie of the same color?

Answer:

56 shirt-and-tie outfits.

Explanation:

We have been given that for each of 8 colors, you have one shirt and one tie of that color. We are asked to find the total shirt-and-tie outfits, if you refuse to wear a shirt and a tie of the same color.

Since you refuse to wear a shirt and a tie of the same color, so for each tie you will have 7 shirts and that will make 7 outfits.

Similarly, for 8 ties, you will have 7 shirts and that will make
8* 7=56 outfits.

Therefore, you can make 56 shirt-and-tie outfits, if you refuse to wear a shirt and a tie of the same color.
