The length of a rectangle is the sum of the width and 3. The area of the rectangle is 54 units. What is the width, in units, of the rectangle?

let width=x

length=x+3

x(x+3)=54

x²+3x-54=0

x²+9x-6x-54=0

x(x+9)-6(x+9)=0

(x+9)(x-6)=0

x=-9,6

x=-9 (rejected)

as width can't be negative.

hence width=6 units
