Subtract to find the amount of the difference:

20,000 - 12,000 = 8,000

divide tha amount of the difference by last years pay:

8,000/ 20,000 = 0.6666

0.666 x 100 = 66.7%

Answer: -40%

Explanation:

\mathrm{Based \ on \ the \ given \ conditions: $(12000-20000) / 20000$ \\}Calculate the sum or difference: $(-8000)/(20000)$ \\Determine the sign: $-(8000)/(20000)$ \\Cross out the common factor: $-(2)/(5)$ \\

\mathrm{Multiply \ a \ number \ to \ both \ the \ numerator \ and \ the \ denominator:} -(2)/(5) * (20)/(20)$

\mathrm{Write \ as \ a \ single \ fraction:} -(2 * 20)/(5 * 20) \\\mathrm{Calculate \ the \ product \ or \ quotient:}-(40)/(100) \\\mathrm{Rewrite \ a \ fraction \ with \ denominator \ equals \ 100 \ to \ a \ percentage:} $-40 \%$
