Philomena has read the first 309 pages of a novel. If this is 60% of the entire book, how many total pages are in the novel?

Answer:

let p be the number of pages in the entire book. If she read 70% of the book, that means she read .70p.

But the second sentence said she read 84 pages. Well that means these 2 quantities must be equal....so,

.70p = 84
