carbon dioxide reduces the oxygen concentration in the surrounding, thus no combustion can taken place.
Blanket cuts the oxygen supply from the surroundings.
Sand stops the oxygen from reaching the fire for a few moment.
Water gives the fire a wide spread across the burning surface.
