Using Pythagoras' identity in the right triangle.

The square on the hypotenuse is equal to the sum of the squares on the other 2 sides , that is

6.5² = x² + 2.5²

42.25 = x² + 6.25 ( subtract 6.25 from both sides )

36 = x² ( take square root of both sides )


√(36) = x , that is

x = 6
