URGENT PLEASE HELPPP

A species of fish has developed the ability to eat smaller fish and algae over time. Some fish with smaller mouths eat the algae, and ones with larger mouths eat other fish. If the algae were to go extinct, how would genetic variation help save the fish species?

If the fish species had genetic variation they would be able to eat other sea plants or fish which would stop them from starving
