Recent studies show that extreme cold is 20 times more deadly than extreme heat. In the short story “To Build a Fire” by Jack London, the man was extremely stubborn and did not listen to the old man telling him to not go in this weather or he will be a dead man (London 14). The man was trying to make it back to the safety of camp in 75 degrees below freezing weather. He struggles to keep his doubts and fear out of his head while he trudged forward regretting neglecting the advice given to him by an old man; after 50 degrees below freezing only traveling with a partner. The theme of this story is shown through the setting, the characters, and the man’s decision.
The setting takes place at the Yukon Trails near Alaska during the winter. The characters are the boys, the old man, the man, and his dog. The man is trying to get to the boys at the camp. Throughout the story, the man and his dog are on the Yukon trail close to Alaska. London writes in the story, the weather on the Yukon trails, “There was no sun nor hint of sun, though there was not a cloud in the sky. It was a clear day, and yet there seemed an intangible pall over the face of things, a subtle gloom that made the day dark, and that was due to the absence of sun.” (London 1). The theme of London's "To Build a Fire" is to always listen to the advice of the more experienced elders and have some common sense when it comes to nature.
There were many themes in the short story “To Build a Fire” for example, The man’s ideas of manhood drove him into situations that someone with less ego and arrogance may have dodged completely. When the man traveled alone, he became aware of the dangers of the Yukon and eventually caused his death. This all could have been avoided in the first place if the man would have gone with the boys and tried not to show off that he is a man. At least the dog was smarter than him. It all reflects the thought process of the man and his decision-making skills.
The theme of the story “To Build a Fire'' first appears when the man does not think twice about the weather and believes the cold is not a danger. The temperature only strikes him as something cold to endure, not a danger in itself; “Such a fact impressed him as being cold and uncomfortable, and that was all.” (London 10). His knowledge of the temperature and terrain does not help him against the harsh winter, because he believes himself to be strong, he is full of male machismo. The man is quick and alert in the things of life, but only when it comes to impulses, and not in common sense. There is a mental conflict in the man’s ability to apply his knowledge to practical survival. He does not see the extremely low temperature as a problem; he merely understands that “it certainly was cold.” (London 5) The man cannot see the danger in the natural environment, and that lack of judgment proves to be his downfall.
