first of all,

y=x-2 (equation 1)

x+y=4 (equation 2)

put y= x-2 into x+y=4

Then,

x+(x-2) =4

x+x-2= 4

2x-2=4

2x= 4+2

2x= 6

divide both sides by the coefficient of x,

x=3

Then,

put x=3 in equation 1

y= 3-2

y=1
