Step 1: Simplify cos 2x.


\cos(2x) = \cos {}^(2) (x) - { \sin {}^(2) (x) }^(2)


\cos(2x) = \cos {}^(2) (x) - (1 - \cos {}^(2) (x) )


2 \cos {}^(2) (x) - 1

We know that cos x= 3/5 so that means


2((3)/(5) ){}^(2) - 1 = 2( (9)/(25) ) - 1 = (18)/(25) - 1 = ( - 7)/(25)

So the exact value of cos 2x=


( - 7)/(25)

There is another way to find this but this is easier.
