Answer

One unit of length on the plan represents some number of same units of length on the ground,such as 1/1000,etc.

This Ratio of map distance to the corresponding ground distance is independent of units of measurement and is called representative fraction (R.F.).

The representative fraction can be very easily found for a given engineer’s scale.

The scale of a map is given as= 1:4000

If the scale is,

R.F.= 1:4000

=1/4x 10x100

1cm=40m

Two places are 9 cm apart on the map.

the actual distance between two places

=4x 90

=360 m

=360/1000 Km

=0.36 Km
