Maria collected some stones at the beach. Now she wants to make a clear plastic container to display the stones. To plan the container, Maria decides that she must first find the volume of the stones. Maria had an aquarium that is shaped like a rectangular parish. It's 8 inches wide, 16 inches long and 10 inches high. Maria pours some water onto the aquarium. She finds that the water reaches to the height of 4 inches. Find the volume of the water in the aquarium. Next, Maria now puts the stones on the aquarium. She measures and finds that the water reaches to new height of 7 inches. Find the volume of the stones

Answer:

The volume of the stones is 382 cube inches.

Explanation:

The dimensions of the aquarium are;

length = 16 inches

width = 8 inches

height = 10 inches

The height of the water in the aquarium = 4 inches

i. Volume of the water in the aquarium = length x width x height

= 16 x 8 x 4

= 512 cube inches

The volume of water in the aquarium is 512 cube inches.

ii. The new height of water = 7 inches.

New volume of water = 16 x 8 x 7

= 896 cube inches

The new volume of water is 869 cube inches.

The volume of the stones = New volume of water - initial volume of water

= 869 - 512

= 384 cube inches

The volume of the stones is 382 cube inches.
