The temp is -5 deg Celine, if the temp rises by by 17 deg, what is the new temp? Please show work

This question deals with integers which are represented by a number scale where -1 is considered higher than -27, and 1 is lower than 27. The more higher the negative integer (negative number represented by a (-)) gets, the lower the value of the number.
-5 is not the same as 5.
The term rising means adding or increasing
-5 + 17 is 12
This can also be written at 17-5, since we are only rearranging the placement of both numbers.
