The Human Development Index combines three main aspects of human development into an index calculation. Those three things are a long healthy life, access to knowledge and a decent standard of living. The HDI is determined by taking the geometric mean of life expectancy, education (years of schooling), and per capita GNI.
When attempting to raise levels of development the challenges country's may face can be severe and affect their HDI. Some of these problems could be divergence within countries. For example China, North China is poorer than South- East China. Having this divergence affects the country's HDI. Also, a country's higher GNI per capita can mask widespread inequality. Inequality is high in some country's with with higher GNI per capita. This can be seen in Russia. Attempting to change a country's HDI levels can throw off their progress and affect their progress and affect people's education. In extreme cases it can effect the geometric mean of life expectancy.
Ending discrimination against women and ensuring equal opportunities and jobs are essential for long-term growth and sustainable development. Gender equality has been shown to boost economic development, which is critical, especially in countries with high unemployment and economic opportunities.
