Plants get energy from sunlight to produce carbohydrates. When a consumer such as herbivore consume plants, he gets energy and when a canivore or omnivore consume the primary consumer, energy is also transfered to them and this is called food chain.

Matter from the environment which include fallen leaves or trees will decompose after a while in the ground when decomposers begin to act on it and it will eventually give them energy. Decomposer help break down organic matter such as leaves,dead animals and get little amount of of energy in the energy flow pyramid
