South Africa has one of the highest levels of inequality in the world. The reasons for ongoing inequality in South Africa are multifaceted. Here are some of them:

• Skewed income distribution:

Income distribution remains highly skewed1. This means that a small percentage of the population holds a large percentage of the wealth, while the majority of the population holds very little wealth.

• Unemployment:

High unemployment is a major factor behind the inequality levels. Unemployment reached 27 percent in 20172.

These problems can be overcome with the right policies and strategies. The South African government has used different tools to tackle the stubborn levels of inequality that have plagued the country, including through progressive fiscal redistribution. However, it will take time and effort to address these issues comprehensively.
