In the cell cycle, cells frequently pause for some time before undergoing mitosis. What reasons do you think this happens?

They stop because it’s a “checkpoint”. A checkpoint is a stage in the eukaryotic cell cycle at which the cell examines internal and external cues and "decides" whether or not to move forward with division.
