2x - 4y = - 14 → (1)

- 8x + 4y = - 4 → (2)

Adding (1) and (2) term by term will eliminate the y- term

- 6x + 0 = - 18

- 6x = - 18 ( divide both sides by - 6 )

x = 3

Substitute x = 3 into either of the 2 equations and solve for y

Substituting into (2)

- 8(3) + 4y = - 4

- 24 + 4y = - 4 ( add 24 to both sides )

4y = 20 ( divide both sides by 4 )

y = 5

solution is (3, 5 )
