The goal is to get x by itself, in order to do that you have to get rid of the other numbers, and you have to do it ON EACH SIDE OF THE EQUATION


(2)/(3) x -4+4 =20+4

-4 + (+4) = 0

So that leaves


(2)/(3)x = 24

Next is to get rid of the
(2)/(3) by multiplying the numerator by itself.


(2)/(3) * 3 = 24*3

Which leaves


2x=72

Now just divide 2 because it's multiplication.

2x ÷ 2 = 72 ÷ 2

2x / 2 cancels each other out and leaves x

and 72 ÷ 2

= 36
