(-b±√b²-4ac)/2a

First off we can find the discriminant. Replacing b with 7, a with 2, and c with -5 gives us a discriminant of 89. But there are two solutions with the discriminant 89.

The second deciding factor would be finding the denominator, which is 2a. Replacing a with 2 gives us 4.

We already know the solution is the first one, but it's important to find the value of the first part of the numerator, -b. Using that we can tell that it's -7, and not 7.
