"Turtle!" Then, a hand gently scoops up the creature. It is an eastern box turtle. This was the scene when a squad
of environmentalists, researchers, and others began working against the clock to save eastern box turtles outside
of Washington, DC. The turtles' habitat, hundreds of acres of woods, was scheduled to be paved over for a new
highway. The rescue squad scoured the woods. Turtles found on the expeditions were put on the safe side of a
mesh fence installed to keep them from returning to their old homes.
