The Indian National Congress was the major political party vying for independence from the British and as a Hindu dominated party, enjoyed widespread support. It was founded by Naoroji and others in 1885.

Muslim League

• Wanted a Muslim nation,
• Represented minority

The Muslim League was the other major party. They represented the minority which technically means the Muslims because Muslims were in the minority in India. They wanted a Muslim nation that would be free of Hindu influence.

Both

• Wanted equal rights
• Independence from Britain

Regardless of their personal goals however, both parties wanted certain things from the British. They wanted to be treated equally with the whites in their own country and they wanted the right to govern themselves which meant independence from Britain.
