Now we can set up a equation.

(2+x)(4+x) = 48

8 + 2x + 4x + x^2 = 48

x^2 + 6x - 40 = 0.

We can factor the left side of the equation.

(x+10)(x-4) = 0.

Therefore, x equals either -10 or 4. Since you can't increase a dimension by a negative amount, x must equal to 4.
