The San Francisco half-marathon is a 13.6-mile race that travels up and down the hills of San Francisco. One street, Folsom Street, has a slope that can be represented by the function 2y=4x+7. Another street, Divisadero Street, has a slope that can be represented by the function 5y = 2x +9.

Which of these hills would you rather run-up? Why? Use evidence to support your answer.

Answer:

Explanation:

Ok, from what I just reviewed, once you get the equation into the form of y = mx + b, the m is the slope of a line.

So take the first street, Folsom

2y = 4x + 7

y = 2x + 7/2

the slope is 2.

The second street, Divisadero

5y = 2x + 9

y = 2/5x + 9/5

the slope is 2/5.

So whether we're talking about 2/5 of an inch, 2/5 of a foot, or 2/5 of a mile, 2/5 is less than 2, so I would rather go up the less steep road...Divisadero.
