Answer:

Width = 5

Length = 11

Explanation:

Let :

Width, = x

Length = 2x + 1

Area of rectangular garden is given as 55 ft²

Area of a rectangular garden, A = Length * width

Hence,

x * (2x + 1) = 55

2x² + x = 55

2x² + x - 55 = 0

Using the quadratic equation formula :

a = 2 ; b = 1, c = - 55

-b ± sqrt(b² - 4ac) / 2a

Using the quadratic equation solver to save computation time :

The roots are :

-5.5 and 5

Dimension can't be negative ; so x = 5

Hence,

width, x = 5

Length, 2x + 1 = 2(5) + 1 = 10 + 1 = 11

Hence,

Width = 5

Length = 11
