I’m not sure if it’s 9 or the square root of 53

Can somebody explain it to me?

a^2+b^2=c^2

a=7 b=2 c=?

7^2+2^2=c^2

49+4=c^2

53=c^2

Because 53 cannot be square rooted, the answer would the the square root of 53
