A father is 28 years older than his daughter. In six years' time, he will be three times her age. Find their present ages.

Please use an algebraic equation to find the answer and show your working out if possible!!

Answer:

8 and 36

Explanation:

let the daughter's age be x then father is x + 28

In 6 years their ages are

x + 6 and x + 28 + 6 = x + 34

Father is 3 times her age , then equation is

x + 34 = 3(x + 6) ← distribute

x + 34 = 3x + 18 ( subtract x from both sides )

34 = 2x + 18 ( subtract 18 from both sides )

16 = 2x ( divide both sides by 2 )

8 = x

Daughter's age is 8 and father's age is 8 + 28 = 36
