Answer:

128 in^2

Explanation:

Surface area is the total area of a given shape. This is different from volume. You can think of the surface area as how much wrapping paper it would take to wrap a Christmas present box. Volume can be thought of as how much water it would take to fill up the Christmas present box.

The surface area formula is equal to the area of all sides of the box.

In this case, we have two squares on each side of the box. The formula for the area of a square is SxS, in this case, it is 4x4 so the area of each one is 16. since there are two we add them together getting the total area for the squares being 32.

We also have four rectangles. The formula for rectangles is Length x Width. In this case, our Length is 6 and our width is 4. 6 x 4= 24. Since we have four of them we multiply 24 x 4 to get 96.

Finally, we add the squares and rectangles to each other and get 32+96=128

You may be wondering why it is inches squared. This is just because of how we multiply with units. Just like 4x4 is the same thing as 4 squared (also known as 4^2), inches x inches=inches squared(also known as in^2).
