Brian realizes he only has so many things next he thinks through many solutions and solves which one will work the best. For example, at the beginning the pilot has a heart attack and dies then Brian realizes he has to do something. So while is trying to control the plane he has two solutions to get on land or water. He thinks about landing on some trees and hoping he doesn't die or he can keep flying until the fuel runs out and hopefully land next or in the water. He know both are risky so he chooses the second option and lands in the water but survives.
