Quality of life in the new nation is low. The photo shows a medium HDI score of 0.620. However,when inequality is considered, the score drops. The Inequality-adjusted Human Development Index (IHDI), shows a low score of 0.430. The continuous conflicts and political instability are the main causes of the low quality of life. During the struggle for independence, the Indonesian army destroyed about 70 percent of the country’s infrastructure, including roads, schools, homes, and irrigation systems. The newly elected government had to build a country all over again. Foreign aid was an important source of income for Timor-Leste directly after independence. The UN and the world community poured billions of dollars into the new country. This money was used to help refugees of the violence, to create infrastructure, and to develop social services.However, there is still a long way to go. Deaths from preventable diseases remain high, due to poor access to healthcare. Malnutrition affects 45 percent of all children under 5 years of age. Improving nutrition is one of Timor-Leste’s highest priorities.
