The telephone pole shows how he looks up to his father. It also shows the similarities between his father and him. When Jose asked his father what he saw up at the top of the telephone pole, he said work. Jose said he took this as truth, and later began doing hard work in the sun like his father. It relates to the theme that being a good worker doesn't mean much in life if you're not a good person because if Jose didn't have his father maybe he would've turned out like Arnie; a liar who tries to escape the consequences of his actions catching up to him.
