Notice that we can calculate the area of the square and the rectangle separately to get the following:


\begin{gathered} A_1=3\cdot3=9in^2 \\ A_2=9\cdot2=18in^2 \\ \Rightarrow A=A_1+A_2=9+18=27in^2 \end{gathered}

therefore, the total area is 27 in^2
