Given:

it is given that Hogan has work as a nurse at Springfield General Hospital for 8 years longer than her friend Bill. two years ago she had been at the hospital for twice as long.

Find:

we have to find how long has each been at the hospital?

Step-by-step explanation:

Let x be the number of years Hogan has been at the hospital

and y be the number of years Bill has been at the hospital.

Then,

y + 8 = x....................(1)

and

2(y-2) = x - 2...................(2)

we can rewrite the equation (1) and (2) as below

x - y = 8.....................(3)

x - 2y = -2...................(4)

subtract eqn(4) from (3), we get

x - y = 8

x - 2y = -2

- + +

.....................

y = 10

put y = 10 in equation(1), we get

x - 10 = 8

x = 8 + 10

x = 18

Therefore, Hogan has been at the hospital 18 years and Bill has been there 10 years.
