Na is sodium so how does sodium give away it valence electrons to become positive

In this state, there is only one electron in the valence shell. The tendency is for sodium to lose an electron so that the new resulting valence shell (2) is in its most stable state (full octet). This loss of an electron results in the ionization of sodium, to form the positively charged ion Na+.
