We start by assigning variables for their present ages.

Let Anslemo's age be x while his brother is y

From the first part of the question, his brother's age is 9 times his age.

Hence;

y = 9 * x

y = 9x ....................................(i)

In 6 years time, his brother will be only 3 times as ols as he is;

In six years time, Anselmo's age will be x + 6 while his brother's age will be y + 6

In this six years time, the brother will be 3 times what Anselmo will be

Hence;

(y + 6) = 3(x + 6)

y + 6 = 3x + 18

y = 3x + 18 -6

y = 3x + 12 ........................................(ii)

Since we have y in both equations, we can simply eqaute both;

Hence;

9x = 3x + 12

9x -3x = 12

6x = 12

divide both sides by 6

6x/6 = 12/6

x = 2

Recall;

y = 9x

Substituting the value of x here;

y = 9 * 2

y = 18

Anselmo is presently 2 years old while his brother is 18 years old
